Hacienda Rio Negro has the distinction of being Costa Rica’s first Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee farm. We are proud to offer this single estate coffee. We take the same care and oversee each stage of development of our Rio Negro coffee as we do with our La Minita; we process the coffee to our exacting standards at our own Beneficio Rio Negro located right on the farm. Rio Negro coffee has a nice velvety body, mild acidity, and flavors of graham cracker and chocolate.

HACIENDA RIO NEGRO

Located in remote southern Costa Rica, the Rio Negro region enjoys a well-defined rainy season, which promotes optimal coffee flowering and high quality production. This is an area rich in coffee culture, where producers are committed to quality and proud of what they produce. There are approximately 700 acres of coffee in production with the majority of the trees being the Catuai and Caturra variety. In 2001, Hacienda Rio Negro became the first farm in Costa Rica to become Rainforest Alliance Certified.

Recently renovated, Beneficio Rio Negro combines the best of traditional and modern technologies. Rio Negro having the Rainforest Alliance Certification is not just a label to them but an ongoing process to grow coffee but leave the beautiful country unharmed. The mill generates its own hydroelectric power and coffee beans are dried using the same biomass furnace introduced at Beneficio Rio Tarrazu.

BUT WHY BUY?

For one thing a Rainforest Alliance Certified farm is one that complies with 10 standards set in place by the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN). These standards include ecosystem conservation, wildlife protection, and fair treatment and good working conditions for workers.

But in the end what it’s all about is the great taste. It’s undeniably a one of a kind taste ,which every time you drink it you notice something new such as: chocolate, cherry, graham cracker, black current, etc.

Head to our shop page, it’s listed as Costa Rican in the coffee section if you want to try it for yourself or give us a call 314-534-6666. You can find this coffee selling in many places for up to 20$ a pound!
